Packing for Your First Safari
Neutral colours, layers and a good camera go a long way on safari. Here's what actually matters.
The essentials
Neutral-coloured clothing (khaki, olive, sand) — avoid bright colours and pure white
A warm layer for early-morning and evening game drives
Wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and high-SPF sunscreen
Binoculars — one pair per person if possible
A dry bag or sleeve for cameras and phones on dusty roads
What to leave at home
Camouflage clothing is restricted in some countries, and heavy suitcases are impractical on light-aircraft transfers between camps — a soft duffel bag is best.
Pack for layers, not for looks — mornings can be under 15°C and afternoons over 30°C on the same day.
